Legal and tax questions, considered together

Anwalts- und Steuerkanzlei Karaoglan is based in Berlin-Wilmersdorf. Only lawyers work at the firm. As lawyers (Rechtsanwälte) we are entitled to provide unrestricted assistance in tax matters under section 3 no. 1 of the German Tax Advisory Act (Steuerberatungsgesetz). We are not appointed as tax advisers (Steuerberater).

Many matters have a legal and a tax side. A termination agreement settles the severance payment and at the same time determines how much of it remains after tax. A transfer of shares in a GmbH is company law and gift tax in one. We examine both sides from the outset, so you do not need a second firm for your matter.

Our approach is straightforward: we look at the legal and the tax side of a case together before we act. Where an out-of-court settlement reaches your objective more quickly, we pursue it. Where it does not, we represent your interests before the courts and the authorities. Working with specialist colleagues, tax advisers and auditors, we make sure that nothing is left open.

You have one contact person at the firm who knows your file. We advise in English, German and Turkish; within the team we also speak Arabic. Confidentiality is the basis of every engagement.

Focus of practice

Matters involving Germany and Turkey

Businesses and families with ties to both countries face questions that no single legal system answers on its own. Where should the company be set up? Where is the tax payable? How is an estate taxed in two countries? We advise on German law and German tax law with an eye on the Turkish side of the matter.

Please note: our lawyers are admitted to practise in Germany. Where a matter concerns Turkish law alone – court proceedings or register matters in Turkey, for example – we work together with our partner firm in Turkey. Your point of contact remains in Berlin.

One point in particular: there is no double taxation agreement between Germany and Turkey for inheritance and gift tax. An estate may therefore be taxable in both countries.

  • Setting up companies and branches of Turkish businesses in Germany
  • Estates and gifts with assets in both countries
  • Income and bank accounts in Turkey: reporting obligations in Germany
